The MSC (Marine Stewardship Council) is an organisation dedicated to rewarding those that protect oceans and safeguard seafood supplies. In short, they certify fisheries that fish to ensure sustainable seafood stock in our ocean and minimise environmental impact. Great stuff! Fisheries certified by the MSC can use the label on their products to make it easier for you to spot them. This challenge is all about seeking that label out and buying sustainably.
The label looks something like the one below, so keep an eye out for it.
The MSC label is probably the one you're most likely to find, but if you can source sustainably caught fish elsewhere, then go for it!
Why It's Important
Many of us find fish pretty tasty, but that demand has led to questionable ways of getting those fish out of the ocean and onto our plates.
Bad fishing practices such as bottom trawling and overfishing has lead to the destruction of what once was a vibrant underwater ecosystem.
Keeping our fishing habits in check ensures we're taking more than the ocean can sustainably provide.
